The client

Our client is one of the innovators with an inquisitive mind, with the focus to build people-friendly products so as to simplify day to day mundane tasks. Fascinated by the concept of an online budget tracker, our client was looking for a solution that can easily monitor monthly expenses against the income. He wanted to give users the ease to plan ahead of time and be a wise decision maker.

As a people’s product, the major challenge in designing the app was to induce necessary features while keeping the interface user-friendly. It was important to embed elements in a way that anyone who wants to use the product for money tracking and management could do it without being taught or trained to do so. Considering the fact that the product is for all, a general perspective had to be deployed.

Emphasize

Getting an all-round view of your income, expenditure, and savings is nearly not possible. Even if you simply note down your expenses, tracking it month after month is a tidy job. This put our client into thinking, who then came up with the idea of a money tracking app. Sort of a digital product, Moniwyse is an online budget tracker that takes inputs from the user and provides a 360° view of expenses in a graphical format.

Define

To conduct a one-to-one discussion session, we scheduled a free delivery call. Our team visited the office for the meeting. After hours of brainstorming sessions, we understood that the cause was more about money planning than just tracking. The point that people find it hard to track their expenses and end up spending it lavishly, there was a need for a dedicated digital product.

 

Vrinda Techapps recently delivered a well-built easy-to-use solution that the client liked very much. This solution is branded as Moniwyse – a user-friendly web application that simplifies the budget planning process.

Presently, people relied on excel sheets to track their monthly expenses. While this made the situation better, it isn’t the best solution. Often, these sheets are lost or misplaced, leaving users with a blank page. There is a need to provide a better experience to the users when tracking their budget, let alone plan the same in advance.

Ideate

Blending innovation in something as simple as budget tracking is challenging. The project was new for all of us and as much as efforts it required, our team was diligent to provide more. All of the features provided by them were listed. Multiple elements were considered to be part of the project but then eliminated.

To keep the application simple, a total of five pages were added. The home page, about us, a working demo, pricing, and a blog. The home page would be straightforward, indicating what Moniwyse is all about. Forms were added to have a signup option, a login option and one for the ‘forgot password’ option.

The pricing page was the first part of the home page but later as suggested by the client, we thought a separate page, depicting the price structure in the tabular format would be best. And this is just one instance, our team kept the client in the loop. 

Significant changes were made in our ideas to keep the same people friendly.

Prototype

The ideation phase went well and after a series of modifications, features added within the app adhered to the following.

  • The app must be designed in a way that indicates where the money goes.
  • A planner that would help predict income and then outline the probable expenses.
  • A tracker to notify the different sources of income.
  • Reports generated that would provide a holistic view of the monthly spend.

Our designers worked separately on the front end designing part. A simple but attractive design and finalized on the combination of two colors: white and orange.

STAGE 01

Plan

The main aim of the budget planner was to give users the ease to plan their expenses in advance. With moniwyse, users can plan their budget monthly, quarterly, bi-annually, or annually. Further, the app must allow them to customize their expenses by creating several categories and sub-categories.

Also, the app would allow them to set reminders when expenses exceed the decided amount. The development team took care of all the above, embedding each piece and making the app a people’s product.

STAGE 02

Report and Analyze

The next feature was reporting and analyzing. The app would allow users to report their actual income followed by the expenses. They can also change the currency if needed. The app has a built-in analytics feature that gives users the ease to view their monthly expenses in a pictorial format and make necessary changes to cut down the same.

One can easily down the reports in the desired format. Also, notifications and reminders would ring a bell every time the expenses exceed the limit.

Test and Iterate

Finally, a series of tests were performed to test the efficiency and credibility of the application. User-level testing was considered to be the major aspect as the application had to be user convenient. Tests were conducted in multiple phases.

All of the flaws as detected were fixed and the tests were again performed in a similar manner.  This was an ongoing process and continued until the application seemed near perfect.

Our Process

End Result: Final Application

The final application had a beautiful design with a user-friendly interface. A total of two pricing plans were added (free and pro) along with a signup form, a login tab and a forgot password feature. After buying the product, users would have the ease to add their income, transaction, and other relevant details. Every user would have their personal profile that would highlight all of their information. Also, there would be a dashboard that graphically represents the income, expenses, and savings.
